Mental Health Red Flags guide
Mental health challenges rarely appear overnight. More often, they show up in small shifts first: changes in mood, withdrawal from conversations, poor concentration, disrupted routines, increased irritability, or a noticeable drop in energy or motivation. The challenge is that these signs are easy to dismiss when workloads are high and everyone is busy.
That’s why early awareness matters.
Whether you’re leading a team or managing your own wellbeing, spotting patterns early can make a huge difference. Small signs, recognised early, can prevent bigger problems later – helping people feel supported before stress, burnout, or overwhelm begin to seriously impact performance, relationships, or day-to-day functioning.
To help, we’ve created our free Mental Health Red Flags resource – a practical tool designed to help both individuals and leaders recognise patterns, reflect on what they’re noticing, and know when it may be time to take action. It covers emotional changes, behavioural shifts, cognitive difficulties, physical symptoms, coping changes, and signs of reduced motivation, alongside guidance on what to look for over time and when concern may be warranted.
How to Use This Resource
For leaders:
Use it as a reflection tool during one-to-ones, wellbeing check-ins, or when you notice changes in a team member’s behaviour. It’s not about diagnosing or fixing anyone – it’s about noticing patterns, creating psychological safety, and starting supportive conversations earlier.
For individuals:
Use it as a personal check-in. If you’ve been feeling “not quite yourself”, this resource can help you recognise patterns, understand your own warning signs, and identify whether additional support may be helpful.
At The Academe, we believe mentally healthy workplaces aren’t built through policies alone – they’re built through awareness, honest conversations, and environments where people feel safe to be human.

We are proud to work with forward-thinking organisations all over the world to reduce their staff stress and initiate great conversations. A great starting point would be booking our ‘Conversation Lab’; a two-hour team workshop that builds psychological safety, self-awareness, and empathy, and most importantly, opens up some GREAT conversations!
